On May 22, 2001 – we caved and sent the following letter to Jonathan Browning, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America:
Jonathan Browning Chief Executive Officer Volkswagen Group of America 2200 Ferdinand Porsche Drive Herndon, VA 20171 May 22, 2011 Dear Mr. Browning, I am writing to you to express my dismay at the inability of VW to repair my 2006 Jetta TDi. We have been waiting for almost 5 months now for your technical teams to develop a viable repair option to enable my car to pass the California emissions smog test. To date we have had the camshaft and turbocharger replaced, and the engine control module; which was incorrectly programmed as a Passat upon manufacture. Since then it has been suggested that we have the cylinder head replaced but this has been delayed pending further testing, as of the last week of April. Throughout this ordeal since late January we have received fairly regular updates from Darrell Z. These updates are not so much updates as a confirmation of the lack of progress as all we really get is a vague promise to follow up in another week or two. We also stay in touch with the dealer (Sonnen VW of San Rafael, CA) where the car has been since the end of January. Unfortunately, the story we get from the two sources sometimes differs; for instance, we now know that ours is not the only car with this problem, and that the cylinder head replacement did not solve the problem in the other cases. I am sure if you check the customer care record you will see that we have been lifelong VW owners, since 1979, and I will admit this is the first time a serious problem has arisen. I also realize that the work is being conducted at your expense, even though the vehicle is just out of warranty, although I did draw attention to the smokiness of the exhaust when I originally bought the car in Texas. However, it is clearly not reasonable for this to go on so long without any apparent resolution in sight. In addition, I have an urgent need to be able to sell the car as I have already relocated to West Africa with a company move (I am writing this from Angola). I have requested through Darrell that VW purchase the car from us at the value that was prevailing back in January when this started but he professes that the car will be repaired and made legal to operate again in the state of California. I cannot wait on the off chance that something might succeed so I am therefore writing to you to request that you authorize the purchase of the car so that we can get this matter behind us. I think we have waited long enough and I can think of no one else that would have put up with this so long anyway. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, "VW Complaints"
Here's the contact info for anyone else feeling so inclined to contact Mr. VW.
